Collaboration & Adaptability for Inclusive Lessons (AM)

Eric Rolls

Learn how collaboration and adaptability play an important role in engaging with the student’s motivations and goals. We will also discuss how these concepts are assessed in PSIA-AASI certification assessments to promote student engagement and retention. This multidiscipline presentation was delivered at the 2023 Interski Congress in Finland.

AM-Telemark Turn to Turn
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

Telemark Turn to Turn (AM)

Marc Schanfarber

High level telemark skiing can be described many ways. One aspect is that we’d like lead change and edge change to start at the same time. When we change edges before completing our lead change, there are more options on how we want the skis to behave, usually based on terrain, snow conditions, type/size/shape of turn being performed. We’ll explore and view videos of different skiers changing edges from one turn to another and identify how they doing this – what movements are performed – and if it applies well to the skiing situation.

AM-Interski – Perspectives from a Participant’s Viewpoint
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

INTERSKI – Perspectives from a Participant’s Viewpoint (AM) – Alpine

Michael Drake

  • INTERSKI happens every 4 years, as a get together of snowsport instructors from all corners of the globe to share, swap notes and mutually develop our sport. Whereas each member country is represented by its respective Demo Team, the event has a long tradition of embracing participation with general membership/professional ski and snowboard instructors of the member countries; this means you and me. For this talk, I will share observations as a participant of the most recent INTERSKI in Finland, as well as include some added notes and perspectives of the three INTERSKIs prior.

AM-Mobility for Snowsports
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

Mobility for Snowsports (AM)

Jenn Lockwood

Mobility can enhance your on-snow performance, help you reach your technical goals, improve imbalances, reduce aches, pains and risk of injury. In this workshop, you will participate in a mobility program that can be incorporated into snowsports-specific workouts and training plans. These exercises will target body parts from your head to toes, and include foam rolling, dynamic stretches, and complex full-body movements that call on motor control and muscle strength simultaneously.

AM-Utilizing the Teaching Skills Fundamentals
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

Utilizing the Teaching Skills Fundamentals (AM)

Mike Douglas

  • This session will focus on the PSIA-AASI teaching fundamentals. We will explore how to incorporate them into our lesson plans and how to use them in real-world lessons.

AM-What Your Cross Country Ski Coach Didn’t Tell You
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

What Your Cross Country Ski Coach Didn’t Tell You (AM)

Michael Browder

The best in the world often ski differently than what ski instructors and coaches advise as efficient technique. These differences are not accidents. They are conscious choices practiced by the elite of the World Cup. We will explore some of these differences via video and stills followed by discussion.

AM-Talking Tourism
     October 14, 2023 from 10:15 am to 11:45 am

Talking Tourism (AM)

Ron Shepard

When we think of tourists, we often conjure images of mouse ears & cameras. Snowpros know tourism underpins our industry. When we contemplate our role in tourism, we understand the many different ways in which a pro influences guest behaviors, & choices; how we can guide decisions that impact the overall guest experience.

In this session, participants will reflect upon the topics of Leisure Choices, Leisure Constraint, Destination Appeal, and the many ways in which pros can nudge their guests into lifelong participation. At the end of the session, you’ll leave with a greater appreciation for tourism concepts to drive revenue & client retention.

Afternoon Session (Choose 1 option):
PM-A 100-Year History of Cross Country Technique
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

A 100 Year History of Cross Country Technique (PM)

Michael Browder

Cross country skiing has evolved a lot in the last 100 years. We will look at the evolution of technique and equipment using the Olympics as a window into the evolution, starting with 1924 in Chamonix.

PM-Adaptive Assessment: Co-Diagnosis & What to do with It
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Adaptive Assessment: Co-Diagnosis & What to Do with It (PM)

Kathleen Priest

During this session we will work to better understand co-diagnosis assessments, both before your student arrives at the mountain, and in person. Determining what would be the primary diagnosis, such as intellectual with a possible secondary physical (and other variations of co-diagnosis). All to better help you in setting your client and yourself up for success and a great time on the snow.

PM-Art of the Turn
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Art of the Turn (PM) – Alpine + Snowboard

Katie Feucht

Versatility and adaptability are key to great skiing and riding. During this session we will explore how the shape and size of our turns impacts our precision and tool/snow performance. Explore different concepts like:

– When we speak about a “round turn shape”, what does that really mean?

– How do we set up a turn to get maximum bend out of our skis or board?

– How does what we do during the first half of the turn set us up for success or failure for the second half of the turn?

PM-Change Edges Before Turning the Skis
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Change Edges Before Turning the Skis (PM) – Alpine

Marc Schanfarber

One piece of magic in skiing is when we change edges, going from one turn to another. Changing edges before turning the skis provides us with more options about how to perform each turn, most often based on terrain, snow conditions, turn size/shape/speed. We’ll explore how this is done – what movements are performed to accomplish the edge change – and discuss if what we see matches up well to the intent of the skier.

PM-Children’s Real & Ideal Movements
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Children’s Real & Ideal Movements (PM) – Alpine + Snowboard

Jenn Lockwood

During this session we will review the CAP Model (Cognitive, Affective, Physical): Physical Domain Characteristics REAL & IDEAL movements specific to children and observe IDEAL movement video & REAL children’s movements. We will discuss what is reasonable to expect from the movements of their bodies and the outcomes. Be prepared to participate, have fun and challenge yourself in this hands-on movement analysis session!

PM-Observation to Prescription: The Next MA Step
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Observation to Prescription: The Next MA Step (AM) – Alpine + Snowboard

Brian Feucht

Learn how precise and concise observations build the foundation for prescription. Through a focus on cause & effect, you will participate in guided practice in building the skills required for student centered prescription.

PM-Senior Movement Analysis
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Senior Movement Analysis (PM) – Alpine

Michael Birch-Jones

As our clients and fellow instructors move into their retirement years how will we keep them sliding on the mountain? Whether you are grappling with this question for yourself or your clients, come and join us. We will look at a variety of video clips of seniors and instructors skiing and talk about low impact approaches to longevity on the mountain (we will be using skiing videos, the common movements and themes with the client would relate to any discipline).

PM-How We Move & What the Data Says
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

How We Move & What the Data Says Happens (PM) – Alpine

Michael Drake

In this session, we’ll be looking at video of both skiers (so we’ll do some MA of some really good skiers), and some vid of some ski sensor data, to help ‘connect the dots’ on what we see and what is going on down at our skis, all in the context of the fundamentals of good skiing. Bring your ‘Goldilocks’ questions (too soon, too late, how much, how little, what might be just right) and we’ll get our technical MA cobwebs shaken out as we approach a new season.

PM-Snowboard Instruction Around the World
     October 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Snowboard Instruction Around the World (PM)

Eric Rolls

Learn a variety of perspectives as Eric Rolls (virtually) takes you around the world and shares different methodologies for teaching snowboarding. Are we more alike than different? Discover for yourself as Eric gives a recap of the international clinics he attended at the 2023 Interski. Eric will also share insights from his previous 3 Interski Congress events.
