What are your snowsports goals? Currently I’m working on my own skiing (as we all do everyday) to be the best I can be. I believe that there is always room to improve and get better. Each time I have an AHH HA moment myself I can add that to my quiver for teaching others as well. I am also planning on trying out for the Alpine ed staff team next go around.

Moving through and training for the different levels of certifications allowed me to improve my and my clients’ overall experience during lessons. I also saw PSIA-AASI as a way to be a part of a community full of like-minded individuals that I could connect with.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of snowsports? I do a lot of Mountain biking and hiking. I also love gear repair and design, so you’ll occasionally find me sewing and drawing.
Who or what got you into instructing snowsports? I grew up in a “mountain family.” My mom was an XC ski instructor, my dad was a mountain guide, and my stepmom was an NW Technical Team Member. They recommended that I work at our local mountain, Mt. Hood Meadows, and get a pass. I wanted to be a ski patroller when I was a teenager, but patrol recommended that I build my skills in our Snowsports School. So, I started teaching skiing when I was a junior in high school. When I was finally old enough to become a patroller, I realized that I would rather be with people on their best day on the mountain rather than their worst. I haven’t regretted that decision at all.
If you weren’t teaching snowsports, what would you do to fulfill the itch to help others grow new skills? If I wasn’t teaching snowsports, I would probably take up guiding mountaineering or hiking. I love helping people find creative ways to approach the outdoors. There is valuable self-expression in how we pick our lines, and I am passionate about keeping people safe while they do it.

Biography
Why did you become, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI? I am a lifelong alpine skier with the passion for the sport and the mountains. My skiing career started in the Tien Shan mountains located in Central Asia, where I learned skiing, mountaineering, guiding and ski racing. After moving to the United States in 1997, I was fortunate enough to live close to mountains in California and Oregon where I worked with various children’s USSA and High School racing programs. Spending a considerable amount of time each winter at Mt. Hood Meadows and being exposed to Mt. Hood Meadows personnel, either through interactions on the slopes or through racing activities, I was very impressed with the sense of community and comradery that is very profound here. This helped me to decide to join Meadows Learning Center as a PSIA ski instructor to share my experience, expertise, and passion with the public. Joining PSIA, teaching at Meadows Learning Center and participating in local, divisional, and national clinics solidified my belief in never ending learning journey, as well as my “more you teach – more you learn” philosophy, prompting me to pursue formal certifications to enhance my ability to share the love for skiing.

Biography
Mike’s home hill is Stevens Pass
Biography
Why you became, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI? The people, the camaraderie, the education and skill boost, the sharing of a joint addiction to all things skiing.
Home Hill? Summit at Snoqualmie, Central
What’s your favorite NW resort when you’re not at your home hill? This is like picking a favorite child. They are all so distinctive with their own personalities. What’s my mood? Nooks, crannies, hidden hits, no two runs alike? That’s Stevens. Mission Ridge for great cruisers, and the off piste when the snow is there. Crystal for the hiking and the bowls…. and, well, does Whistler counts? DON’T MAKE ME PICK.
What are your snowsports goals? Keep on keeping on with the process. It never ends. There is always more to learn, about skiing, and about how to connect with others to help them along the journey of this thing we do. There is always something to pitch in and help along the way with instructing, whether it’s with my home ski school, or PSIA, such as the Senior Specialist program. I’d love to get that up to a National Standard.
What is your favorite way to spend some down time? A good book with a cat wound up at my feet? Maybe a nice big deep red wine in reach. Pull my acoustic guitar down off the wall and try to get enough practice to ‘graduate’ from the guitar world equivalent of green runs to blues (runs, vs the music).
What are your hobbies/interests outside of snowsports? I like to fly recreationally, and that activity keeps me occupied in the summer. Likewise, summertime, a favorite activity is to combine bicycles and travel. Self guided bike tours to Europe as been my thing for a while. It is one of the BEST ways to immerse into and experience another country. Right now, I’m in ‘remission’ for glass casting and glassblowing. I expect to get back into that now the studio I’ve worked thru is back to more normal, post covid, status.
Who or what got you into instructing snowsports? There is a long version, and a short version of this story. Short version, is a friend that I routinely had lunch with at work was the Training Director for the Boeing SKIBACS Ski School, and one fall we were chatting about the new hire training coming up. I tried it out, fully expecting to not like actually instructing, but got hooked, and 35 years later, here I am still. Thanks, Peter!
If you weren’t teaching snowsports, what would you be doing to fulfill the itch to help others grow new skills? There is that ‘other’ job…the one that keeps me living in the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed. Interestingly, a lot of the energy I get into figuring out how to improve the skills and capabilities of others in the ski world, applies there also…people are people. Yet, without my ski world passion, I doubt I’d be as on top of teaching, learning theory as I am.
Favorite ski/snowboard film? Does the Aspen Southpark episode count as a film? Perhaps not, but it was the first thing that popped to my mind. I love the Warren Miller films, and although the more recent ones are entertaining, the earlier ones with Warren narrating with his dry wit will always be my favs.
Current go-to skis/snowboard? My all rounder skis are Volkl Kendo 88s. My relatively new Blizzard HRCs have not left the garage this season…we’ve just been needing better snow surface conditions.
Favorite Animal? ‘Da Boyz’. I have a pair of Siberian cats. I had googled, ‘Dog like cats’ and that breed came up on one of the lists. They’re awesome.
Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Again with this ‘favorites’ question. Too many to pick one. Ski wise? Love the feel, the vibe, the terrain of Chamonix valley. But so many other cool places. Not ski wise? As I had mentioned, biking another country is the best. Austria on bike trails and side roads in the summer was incredibly scenic. Italy, Greece, the Balkans, all fantastic but each for different reasons (scenery, food, history, culture).

Biography
Why you became, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI?
Pretty haphazardly to be honest. In About 2009 The construction industry had taken a pretty serious downturn. I was killing time on Whitefish Mountain resort website and noticed they were hiring. I applied, tried out and made the cut not knowing at all what I was in for. I had been skiing for about 25 years at this time although I did not ski for a few seasons prior to becoming a member of WMR ski school. Since that first season I was hooked on learning as much as I could being so inspired by the seasoned veterans I was surrounded by. As I became more knowledgeable, I learned how much more there was to learn. Through the experiences of traveling to exams I was introduced to a much broader world of the PSIA family and quickly developed a passion for traveling more and being around other snow sports fanatics like me. While working towards achieving a level 3 certification I discovered a great desire to share my passion with anyone around me that could benefit from my experiences and knowledge. After achieving the prestigious level 3 I found myself wanting to continue my education journey and set my sights on regional clinic leader as a way to keep myself on a focused learning path. In the meantime, I also set my mind to inspire as many around me as possible and to bring as much knowledge as possible back to my ski school to make available as much opportunity as possible to elevate the quality of product offered to my home mountain. PSIA has given me another avenue to be able to enjoy my passion for skiing and to help others find their love of the mountain life.
Home hill? Whitefish Mountain Resort at Big Mountain.
What’s your favorite NW resort when you’re not at your home hill? As I tried to think about it my brain glitched to at least 50 snapshots of incredible memories from every place I’ve been. I can’t even give an honest answer.
What are your snowsports goals? To be in the position to inspire as many people as possible, instructors and guests.
What is your favorite way to spend some down time? I really enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee and sitting in the lounge chair with a blanket and just being chill for a bit in the mornings on days off in the winter.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of snowsports? Currently my downtime consists of spending time with family in various ways, I love the chance to travel with my family in the winter and spend some great time together. summer we like to be on lakes and rivers camping and fishing.
Who or what got you into instructing snowsports? There was no outside influence in my life. I took a chance and decided to give it a try. I really had no idea in the world what it was going to be. Very quickly it was the Great people with a love as great as my own for this sport.
If you weren’t teaching snowsports, what would you be doing to fulfill the itch to help others grow new skills? Before I became a ski instructor, I was not conscious of my desire to help people grow as it is today. In my other world as a builder, I have always helped those in need to get better at their job. PSIA has helped me be a better mentor in construction.
Favorite ski/snowboard film? The movie Better off Dead with John Cusack, CLASSIC!
Current go-to skis/snowboard? Head Super shape.
Favorite animal? My 2 dogs and a few cats.
Favorite place you’ve traveled to? I would say that I could not pick a place. More importantly Who I travel with is more memorable because of who I am sharing an experience with. I enjoy traveling to the grocery store if I can do it with the ones I love.

Biography
Why you became, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI?
I decided to take a one-year break as a ski bum in Telluride, and that one year turned into a lifelong career. All of my trainers at the mountain were very supportive, and I eagerly attended as many training clinics as I could during my first year. I became an eager student and tried to learn everything I could about skiing, telemarking, and snowboarding through the organization. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of interpersonal and teaching skills I developed along the way. The PSIA-AASI has made me a better person, and I feel so grateful for the organization. I hope to give back as much as it has given me.

What’s your favorite NW resort when you’re not at your home hill?
Stevens Pass. I just love the steep tree runs and off-piste stashes there.
What are your snowsports goals?
I would love to work my way towards my level 3 snowboard someday, but currently I am working on becoming the best alpine and telemark clinician I can be.
What is your favorite way to spend some down time?
I enjoy spending time with my family: my wife, two girls, and a dog. We love camping and exploring the outdoors. We also love lazy weekends at home, working in the yard and having movie nights.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of snowsports?
Outside of snowsports, I enjoy hiking, paddleboarding, mountain biking, climbing trees, and anything else that involves being outside. I’ve gotten back into weightlifting recently and love throwing kettlebells around. I enjoy playing chess and other board games. I love cooking and making cocktails, and I am always on the lookout for new recipes.
Who or what got you into instructing snowsports?
I have my parents to thank for being a lifelong skier, starting at the age of two. I grew up as a child of ski schools in Taos and ski racing programs on the East Coast. Between my parents, my coaches, and the mountains, I developed a lifelong love for the sport. I took a long time away from skiing but rediscovered my passion when I fled to Telluride for a season. To me there are so many skills needed to be a good instructor, so I find it infinitely interesting. Whether searching for that perfect turn or getting to know your students, each day brings unique challenges that make this job enjoyable.
If you weren’t teaching snowsports, what would you be doing to fulfill the itch to help others grow new skills?
In the off-season, I work as a consulting arborist. I love teaching others about trees and nature and working with the Pacific Northwest International Society of Arborists (PNW-ISA) as an educator.
Favorite ski/snowboard film?
“All I Can” (2011). It features phenomenal skiing from some of my favorite athletes, beautiful cinematography, slick editing, and a poignant message on climate change. And let’s not forget that classic JP Auclair segment that we all dream of replicating someday.
Current go-to skis/snowboard
I’m a huge Rossignol fan. It was the first ski I could remember skiing on when I was a kid (I loved the logo), and I still have so much fun on them. Right now, my daily drivers are the Rossignol Experience 86.
Favorite Animal
Wolf. But I do feel like the mountain goat is my spirit animal, we’ve had some interesting run-ins.
Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
Switzerland. I was fortunate enough to ski there a few seasons ago, and boy, those Europeans know how to live. The mountains are gorgeous, and I just loved the numerous small huts strewn throughout the areas. It’s so cool to see entire cultures built around the mountains.

Biography
Why you became, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI? To note: I was a cynic. I coached PSIA candidates to pass their exams long before I ever was personally involved: circa late ‘70s and the 80s. I thought the organization had nothing for me. But my Parks and Rec boss in Bend, Bruce Ronning, (former PSIA board member and Examiner/Clinician himself), suddenly required this of me for my kid’s ski coaching jobs. To make sure I followed through he paid for everything. I entered reluctantly, but then never looked back. It’s been a great ride.
Home Hill? I’m international and non-affiliated, but I call Bend/Bachelor my spiritual home even though my home address is Beaverton.
What’s your favorite NW resort when you’re not at your home hill? Perhaps the Methow, particularly Sun Mountain as it’s great skiing and I have so many long-term friends there or who come there.
What are your snowsports goals? My snowsport goals have always been twofold: 1) to get better as a skier. One never “arrives” and reaches the top as there is no top. 2) And to become a better coach/teacher. There is always more to learn about being effective, and always more research to support this.
What is your favorite way to spend some down time? I have no down time. Ha! I am playing the violin, or rock, ice or alpine climbing, or guiding, This is my choice and I love it and the lifestyle.
If you weren’t teaching snowsports, what would you be doing to fulfill the itch to help others grow new skills? Teaching climbing. But anyway. these days, more than teach snowsports, I teach others how to teach/coach snowsports. And that role is very, very gratifying.

Biography
Why did you become, and are, involved in PSIA-AASI? I never viewed myself as a teacher of anything until I moved to Lake Tahoe in 2014 and was hired as a teaching assistant with the ski and ride school. During new-hire training, I was asked to transition into a regular instructor role, which ended up changing my life. Creating positive experiences for people and having the ability to introduce others to something I love while providing insight and confidence was the greatest thrill and most fulfilling experience I had ever encountered. Later on, I found that providing these same things for aspiring instructors is arguably even more fulfilling than doing so for students. This is why I ultimately decided to pursue becoming a trainer and examiner with PSIA-AASI.
